Ocean Sports:
Snorkeling/SCUBA - Snorkeling equipment is available at "Snorkel Bob's" in Kailua-Kona, (808-329-0770). Organized dive expeditions are offered by "Fair Wind." They make daily excursions from Kailua-Kona and anchor near the Captain Cook Monument in Kealakekua Bay, (808-322-2788).
Kayaking - Two-man kayaks are available on site, Hale Naia, at $125/week or $35/day (per kayak). Life jackets, back rests and whistles are provided with each kayak rented.
Fishing - A variety of fishing charters are available at Honokahau Harbor, just north of Kailua-Kona.
Other Outdoor Activities
Golf - Major Hotels north of Kailua-Kona have excellent golf courses. The Mauna Kea Beach, Waikoloa, Mauna Lani, Four Seasons and Keauhou are only some of the possibilities.
Hiking - The Volcanoes National Park provide a wide range of hiking and walking trails.
Shopping:
Groceries - Many of the larger stores are located in the center Kailua-Kona. They include Safeway, Costco and Wal-Mart. You may also find some smaller markets in the city of Captain Cook. The Kamagaki Market is ideal for any last minute and specialty items.
Area specialties -
For fresh island fish and a taste of Hawaiian food try Keei Seafood in Captain Cook.
Although you may not be interested in antiques, the Antiques-Art-And? shop serves ice-cream and sorbet in a variety of exotic flavors, such as mango, guava and lilikoi.
On a day trip to Napoopoo the coffee mill is an excellent place to stop. They serve 100% Kona coffee in a variety of blends.
Sightseeing:
Churches, museums -While traveling south on Middle Keei Road, and taking a right onto Painted Church, you will be able to view many painted churches. For a history of Kona try the Kona Historical Society in Kealakekua.
Parks - Driving three miles south on Napoopoo Beach Road it connects brings to the City of Refuge in Honaunau. Volcanoes National Park is 90 miles south and a worthwhile day trip. Here, you will be able to view the volcanic craters and watch fresh lava flow into the ocean.
Restaurants
Our favorite is Middle Keei Cafe. It is located on Hwy 11 in the town of Captain Cook. Gourmet food is served to perfection.
